Everyday Market Tote Bag

Worked entirely in single crochet with worsted cotton, this tote holds its shape without any lining or stiffener. A great beginner project that only uses two stitches from start to finish.

Materials & Yarn

  • 400–500 yds worsted cotton yarn
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Crochet the base

Chain 31, then single crochet around the chain in an oval to form the base, increasing at both ends of each round twice.

    Step 1: Crochet the base
  2. 2

    Work the body

Continue in single crochet without increasing until the bag reaches 12 inches tall.

Tip: Use a stitch marker to track the start of each round — it is easy to lose your place in a spiral.

    Step 2: Work the body
  3. 3

    Shape the top opening

Work 2 rounds of single crochet decreasing slightly to snug in the opening.

Step 3: Shape the top opening
  4. 4

    Add the handles

Chain a long strap and single crochet back across it twice for a firm handle, then attach both ends securely to the inside of the bag.

    Step 4: Add the handles

Helpful Tips

  • Cotton yarn stretches with wear and weight, so keep tension slightly tighter than usual.
  • A cardboard disc slipped into the base gives the bag a flat, stand-up bottom.
